“That’s Just How I’m Built”

I’m rolling down the road and my phone lights up. It’s Omar Khan .

“What you said was honest. Some of it shines a light on your wonderful BS.”

He had a problem with one sentence. The title of this post.

We got on a call that was supposed to last five minutes and went an hour. And somewhere in that hour I started to realize how untrue that statement actually was.

“That’s just how I’m built.” What does that even mean?

I’ll tell you what it means. It means I’m a certain way, I was raised a certain way, and there’s no room for me to move around how I operate or how I feel. That’s the story I was telling myself.

That’s the BS right there.

As a man, as a father, as a husband, I can evolve as many times as I need to for the better of myself and the people around me. I can change my mind. I can pivot. I am not locked into anything.

Then Omar asked me a question that almost mentally and emotionally freed me on the spot.

“What if all that mattered in the world was what Allah was pleased with?”

Everything disappeared. The stress of daily life, lifted. The Stronghold, gone. My goals, my worries, all of it, just gone. It was like a full mental reboot.

Then I let it all come back in, one thing at a time. My wife. My kids. The Stronghold. Every obstacle sitting in front of me. And I re-categorized all of it through one lens: what is Allah pleased with, and what is He not?

That’s the pivot we all have to make. Stop sorting your life by what’s hard and what’s easy, what’s working and what’s not. Sort it by what He’s pleased with and build from there.
